Recently, I had the pleasure of sampling a variety of delicious wine from The Grange of Prince Edward. The freshness that defines Prince Edward County and Ontario’s cool-climate wines is a theme that was tasted in every wine sampled. Each poured glass offered the perfect brightness needed as we head towards warmer weather.
Here’s a review of what I sampled:
BUBBLY
2021 Lafontaine du Loup Brut
Alc./Vol.: 12%
Review: A bright bubbly made in the traditional method from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and aged for 3 years on its lees. The nose offers citrusy lemon and granny smith apple, wrapped in limestone minerality and hints of almond croissant.
The palate offers a medium-bodied wine with fine bubbles and bright tartness. The flavours follow the nose, with citrus notes leading, followed by apple and an almond finish.
Wine-Food Pairing: Great on its own and versatile in terms of pairing, this wine is perfect to share with friends on a patio over a bowl of chips, fries, or a basket of fried chicken. Looking for something more fancy? Try with buttery scallops.
ROSÉ
2025 Estate Series Rosé, Isabella Block
Alc./Vol.: 13.5%
Review: Made from a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir, the nose releases cantaloupe and ripe strawberry notes. The palate offers lingering zesty lemon and clementine notes with traces of field berries.
Wine-Food Pairing: Perfect on its own, or try with prosciutto and melon, a strawberry garden salad, goat cheese crostini, or grilled shrimp skewers.
WHITE
2025 Estate Series Sauvignon Blanc, Newfield Block
Alc./Vol.: 13%
Review: The nose offers orchard fruit, predominantly peach, and cantaloupe with hints of saline. The palate is zesty with citrus and crisp green apple, and a lingering finish.
Wine-Food Pairing: A perfect wine to go with tortilla chips and guacamole or with goat cheese salad.
2025 Estate Series Pinot Gris, Isabela Block + Northfield Block
Alc./Vol.: 13.5%
Review: The nose reveals tropical fruit notes, followed by orchard fruit, clementine, and hints of orange blossom. Tart and zesty on the palate, with lingering lemon and just a faint whisper of sweetness, finishing with subtle mineral undertones.
Wine-Food Pairing: Pairs effortlessly with white fish in a butter-lemon sauce, and complements young cheeses such as fresh goat cheese or young Gruyère.
2024 Estate Series Chardonnay, Victoria Block
Alc./Vol.: 13%
Review: The nose releases stewed apple and citrus notes wrapped in loads of minerality and a hint of almond. Fresh on the palate with a pleasant mouthfeel and notes of lemon and apple with the faintest touch of vanilla at the finish.
Wine-Food Pairing: Try with pork roast, chicken skewers, or with soft cheeses.
RED
2024 Estate Series Cabernet Franc, Diana Block
Alc./Vol.: 13.5%
Review: On the nose, notes of red berry and earthy beet, with fragrant violet and potpourris accents, and hints of green peppercorn. Medium-bodied and juicy on the palate, with notes of tart red berry and cranberry, finishing with a touch of smoke.
Wine-Food Pairing: Perfect on its own, or try with grilled fennel-seed sausage, or with stuffed eggplant.
2024 Estate Series Pinot Noir, Diana Block
Alc./Vol.: 12.7%
Review: Enticing aromas of ripe raspberry, fragrant rose, sweet autumn leaves, and dark honey. Medium-bodied on the palate, with smooth tannins, bright raspberry‑rhubarb tartness and a lingering mocha finish.
Wine-Food Pairing: Try with a bison burger, grilled portobello, or duck in a raspberry coulis.
2025 Almanac Red:
Alc./Vol.: 13%
Review: A budget friendly Red made from Cab Franc, Merlot, and Syrah. On the nose, dark berry and strawberry notes mingle with earthy beet, forest floor, green undertones, and traces of chocolate. On the palate, medium-bodied with silky tannins, and lingering red berry notes with rhubarb, accents of cinnamon and mocha at the finish.
Wine-Food Pairing: Perfect with an assorted grilled meat platter or with a charcuterie board that includes dried sausage and artisanal herb crackers.
